The key to understanding what antioxidants are, is to understand what free radicals are, because the oxidant part of the antioxidant refers to the oxidation caused by free radicals. Antioxidants are substances that disable, or "scavenge," toxic free radicals. They also protect the cell membrane lipids from oxidation by toxic free radical, through other internal mechanisms. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that are generated in the body as by-products of metabolism. This means that just by eating, breathing and living, free radicals are generated. The healthy body naturally produces antioxidants to balance these destructive effects, one of the more powerful being the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD). Free radicals are abundantly generated in the body, due to various excessive stresses such as air pollution, pesticides, smoking, drug or alcohol abuse. Free radicals cause the body to age, just as rust oxidises or erodes metal and air oxidises, or browns, an apple. Under normal circumstances any destructive effects are counteracted by our own defences. However, when the body is overpowered by an enormous increase in these unwanted free radicals, the real trouble begins.
 
Excessive exposure to various stresses disturbs our equilibrium to the point of causing illness. All these excesses increase the number of free radicals, and there is more and more evidence that the oxidative damage caused by free radicals may cause such maladies as cancer, artherosclerosis, diabetes, liver disease, inflammation and arthritis, as well as acceleration of the ageing process. Under these circumstances, we need more antioxidants than the body itself can supply. Fortunately nature has provided many effective antioxidant sources, one of which is Jiaogulan.
 
Jiaogulan and Dan Shen are the powerful antioxidants in all of our Jagulana Tonics. Jiaogulan induces the body's own synthesis of superoxide dismutase (SOD), which scavenges excessive free radicals. Dan Shen clears out the free radicals and MDA (a very toxic lipid-peroxidation product) and protects the cell membrane from injury by free radicals and MDA. The importance of inducing endogenous (the body's production) SOD, particularly as we age, should not be underestimated. And even if the intestinal wall absorbed some SOD molecules, they would be rejected by the immune system. Therefore, stimulation of one's own endogenous SOD, is vital.
