| An
adaptogen is a substance that helps adjust the body's response, on
the cellular level, to various stresses put upon it. This results
in a regulating effect on many of the body's systems, the immune system,
nervous system, endocrine system, cardiovascular system and mental
functions. The effects one can detect are an increase in mental clarity
and physical energy, enhanced immunity and resistance to disease,
reduced recovery time after exercise (particularly significant for
endurance athletes), improved metabolism, and more restful sleep.

| |
| The
term adaptogen was coined by Russian scientists to describe a substance
that "must be innocuous and cause minimal side effects in the physiological
functions of an organism and must have a non-specific action of immune
enhancement and a normalising action on various bodily functions,
irrespective of the direction of the pathological state." In other
word, an Adaptogen helps bring about "homeostasis," the natural equilibrium
of the body's internal processes. |
| |
| The
internal stability of the body as a whole (homeostasis) is often disturbed,
resulting in various diseases such as gastric ulcer, hypertension,
and neuralgia psychosis. In order to protect oneself from stress,
daily exercise, balanced diet, regular eating and sleeping habits,
a proper balance of work and relaxation are all important. Still,
Adaptogens, or as they are sometimes called, tonics, have their part
to play, by helping the body to adapt to the stress and maintain its
homeostasis. The herb Jiaogulan has demonstrated in scientific studies
that it is a highly effective adaptogenic tonic. |
| |
| At
the core of an adaptogen's scope of actions is the ability to help
the body cope more effectively with stress. Specifically, adaptogens
recharge the adrenal glands, which are the body's nominal mechanism
for responding to stress and emotional changes. The adrenals, which
cover the upper surface of each kidney, synthesise and store dopamine,
norepinephrine and epinephrine. These compounds are responsible for
the changes that occur during the fight-or-flight reaction.. The question
is, if adaptogens normalise the body and enable energy to be used
more productively when stresses are not physical threats, can they
be used to enhance general health and performance? |
| |
| Scientists
found that Jiaogulan exerts a bi-phasic action on the central nervous
system, calming the nerves when they are irritated, while exciting
the nerves when they are depressed. Through adjusting the balance
of the central nervous system, including the brain, sympathetic and
parasympathetic nervous systems, and toning the endocrine system,
Jiaogulan/gypenosides maintain and normalise the functional equilibrium
between the various organs of the body and bolster the stability of
the body systems as a whole. |

| Jagulana
Ltd combines this powerful adaptogenic herb with the antioxidants
Dan Shen and Kiwi fruit juice to form the basis of our adaptogenic
tonics. Additional herbs are added to this basic formula to produce
four different preventive and therapeutic health tonics. |
